In Response to the Daily Prompt Money for Nothing (February 15, 2016):
If you’re like most of us, you need to earn money by working for a living. Describe your ultimate job. If you’re in your dream job, tell us all about it — what is it that you love? What fulfills you? If you’re not in your dream job, describe for us what your ultimate job would be.
On the surface, I have a fairly simple dream, really. Of course, I would love to do what I love (writing and drawing). I could achieve this by writing books and creating the illustrations for them. Whenever I talk to published authors or painters, I can sense the excitement they have for they created.
When I really think about it, there are things about my current job that I like and would like to incorporate in the future. On one hand, being a published author would make me my own boss. On the other hand, I need to work with others on a regular basis. I would love the chance to work on a full team while creating artistic works…or designing for an advertising campaign.
I would even like to incorporate a chance at leadership. Moving upward to become an art director would also be a teaching role.
With that taken care of, I would also like to work in a fun, positive environment. For all the complaints many — including myself — have about Google, it really seems like a fun place to work. It’s like a playground, with great health plans and stock options. Its customer service needs work, to make an understatement. Some also state the pressure to work and stay on campus, but they say the experience is an overwhelmingly positive one.
Additionally, I would like to know that I’m making a positive impact on clients, customers, and the world. So that would be different than Google.
Basically, I would want a mixture of what I stated above:
- a workplace where I get to work with others,
- A place where I get to write and design things
- A career with health, dental, a good vacation package and leave, and a good retirement plan.
If I could have the above while making a positive impact, that would be great.

Is your DREAM JOB that SIMPLE!!!!! Not according to me. U have a lot of great ideas, good concepts, nice perceptions-useful to the self and the society. Everything is not for many-there are a lot of things beyond MONEY! Of course MONEY is no doubt a strengthening force for one but it is not be all and end all! We the co-bloggers are there to view and appreciate/depreciate, criticize positively and make comments, providing feed backs on your creations. What else required ?

My dream job is to work for myself, and not someone else. Even though it’s nice to get a guaranteed check every two weeks, the satisfaction of running your own business and helping others get healthier really makes me happy!

That’s not a bad dream to have. More and more people would like to be their own boss. It doesn’t come without its own set of difficulties, but as long as you want to make a difference, the best of luck to you. There are also a lot of young people coming into the workforce and you have something in common with them. They would like to own their own businesses, but making an impact ranks pretty high, as well.

Really enjoyed reading this blog – it sounds like job satisfaction is a key goal for you and that is really admirable. In my current job I’d say that 80% of my colleagues don’t appear to get any job satisfaction whatsoever, and it’s not all their fault – the organisation makes it difficult to get on and do the job. Although I enjoyed my job for the first few years, I have come to realise that it is not for me. Yes it’s good money, secure and it pays the bills, but it isn’t what I am passionate about. And at 29 years of age I have a lot of years of work ahead of me, and I don’t want to look back and think I spent the majority of my life in a job that I wasn’t passionate about. In the next few years I will be taking steps to get another job – my dream though is to be self employed. It’s so important to have goals and a plan to achieve them. We only get one shot at this life, we need to do our best to live it in a fulfilling way 🙂

Yeah…the reality is that it’s hard for people to land their dream job. While we might be told not to just settle for any job, sometimes we do if it matches up to our acquired skillsets. Money and expenses mainly dictate our choices. And it costs money to take the risk to find the right job.
In a way, I think it might be easier for younger adults to think this way. They are just entering the workforce or have some time to think about what they want to do. One thing they really want is to be contacted by businesses about opportunities.
This is not to say that money isn’t important. It is because of the expenses I mentioned earlier. But people need to be happy in their jobs and know why they are doing them.
BTW: A funny thing I need to mention is that I was researching things about these subjects for my work, too.
