Famous Sayings #155 — ‘Sacred Cow’

July 1, 2019

This pre-meeting ritual of singing the company motto has become our boss’s sacred cow. It’s impractical, time-consuming, and annoying, but he will hear none of it.

Cows are honored during Gopastami, a “Cow Holiday” held yearly in India.

Sorry for being late with this post (I try to post on Sundays), but here is a term that should be familiar to most people.

Chances are you have heard this term uttered by a comedian or someone else who is controversial or iconoclastic. Whenever someone mentions a “sacred cow,” you know they have offended someone, or they are referring to someone who they feel or say is being overly sensitive. But why use the term sacred cow? Let’s first delve into the meaning of that term.

Famous Sayings #107 — ‘New World Order’

June 4, 2018

We must prepare for the coming new world order.

Earlier this year, I talked about conspiracy theories. In that post, I discussed where the phrase “conspiracy theory” came from, how it was first used, and what some prevalent conspiracy theories were. One type of theory I left out concerns a new world order because that phrase is famous saying, too.

When searching for this topic, there was relatively sparse information about the history of the phrase New World Order, although there were plenty of articles and pages that used the phrase, so my search first took me to Wikipedia to find other leads and sourcing material. As it turns out, this is an extensive topic, but I will have to focus on certain aspects so this post won’t be too long.

Famous Sayings: #44 — ‘Friday the 13th’

January 13, 2017

Friday the 13th is an unlucky day.

Note: This post Friday the 13th was originally part of the Famous Sayings that was published on November 13, 2016.

As I was doing research about the superstition surrounding the number 13, I naturally came across information about Friday the 13th. But after promoting my post on The Daily Post’s Community Pool, one respondent suggested that I break up the original post.

That got me thinking: Why not create another post for Friday the 13th? Later on, after launching my second feature, I decided to move this feature to Fridays in order to place the newer feature on Sundays. So here we are.)

3 Things I Don’t Like About Bill Maher (WAW)

Bill Maher, Real Time with Bill Maher, HBO

It’s Thursday, but this is still a Write Anything Wednesday Post. Today, I would like to talk about some disagreements I have with comedian Bill Maher.

Let it be known that for the most part, I enjoy listening to Bill Maher. While I don’t agree with him all the time and I don’t find all of his jokes funny (it would be pretty boring if I did), I agree with him much of the time. And I like the way he speaks (in a structural sense).

However, there have been two things that have bothered me about him over the years. First I have never liked his speech whenever he broached the topic of overweight people. Secondly, I am concerned with him being pretty forceful with his view on religions.

And this year, I have to add a third gripe: The way in which he addresses Millennials. There is an angle here.
