While the phrase “father knows best” might be more familiar because of the sitcom that ran in the United States from 1954 to 1960, but the phrase “mother knows best” might have been recorded much earlier. While I was not able to find a definite source for the origin of this phrase, I was able to find some information on an old work that had “mother knows best” as its title.

Since today is Mother’s Day where I am I decided to wait and share this post 2 days late.

For the day, I wanted to pull a quote that was somewhat well known. It was hard finding a good quote for Mother’s Day that had a clear origin, and so I finally settled on this one. (Now that I think about it, I could have used “Mama knows best.”)

Famous Sayings: #9 — ‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle…’

The hand the rocks the cradle rules the world.

Honestly, when I was planning this, I totally forgot to account for Mother’s Day in the United States. (The same is true for Father’s Day, but I should start looking ahead for that, too, now.)

And I totally had one other saying ready for today. I guess that will have to be moved to a later date.

Anyhoo, I was able to find this phrase. It might not be as well-known to some (or to me), but I am definitely familiar with half of it. If anyone has seen it, there was a 1991 movie starring Rebecca DeMornay called “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.” Without giving away any spoilers, it was a thriller and DeMornay was the villainess.

That movie put a twist on the old saying, but I will focus on the positive meaning. It’s Mother’s Day, after all.
